What's In a Name?

What's In a Name?

Published on 17 May 2025 by Dave Regg

Whenever I have an appointment, the conversation is basically always the same

Them: Hi, can I have your name please?

Me: Sure, it is Dave Regg. R - E - G - G.

T: Sorry, I can't seem to find you. Can you please repeat your name?

M: Yep, Dave Regg. Egg with an R.

T: Oh, sorry about that, I've got you right here.

They don't typically say what happens, but I can easily assume that they looked like the name Gregg. It's fine, I've been living with this conversation for my entire life. The brain is trained to look for patterns that it has learned and understands. I would say 99.99% of people have never heard the last name "Regg" before, but 98% of people have heard the first name "Greg". The brain tricks the person into thinking that I am saying "Greg" and that is what they look up, even if I spell it out. No harm, no foul.

My shower thought for today was how my parents missed an opportunity to name me Greg. Don't get me wrong, I love being able to use the nickname Dr.Egg as a play on my full name, but Greg Regg is just some annoying, nerdy fun.

So this blog post is brought to you by the newly minted Greg Regg. Thank you for reading.
